2017 Central Regional Orchestra Auditions

Dear orchestra students and parents,

The Central Regional Orchestra is an orchestra composed of 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students.  Students are placed in the “A” orchestra or “B” orchestra based on their audition scores.  Ninth (9th) grade students are only allowed to audition if they have not participated in the Senior Regional Orchestra event.  Due to the high number of students who audition, please be prepared on your audition material.  Review the audition requirements carefully.  Please do not audition if you are not available for the event on February 3 & 4.

Location:  Moody Middle School, 7800 Woodman Rd., Henrico, VA 23228

Fee:  $5.20

Audition fee is due: 3:30 p.m., Thur, Nov 17, 2016

Make checks (only, please) payable to:  MLWGS Music Boosters (check will be refunded once student completes the audition)

Sign up deadline is by 3:30 p.m. Thur, Nov 17, 2016.  Sign up sheet is taped to column in rm. 124. Students that audition receive a 100 Playing Test Grade for Q2.

Dates:  February 3 & 4, 2017

Location:  Atlee High School, 9414 Atlee Station Rd, Mechanicsville, VA 23116

Audition day schedule:

Schools will be assigned an AM or PM audition slot.  School time slots are randomly assigned.  Teachers will inform students of their audition time prior to winter break.  BASSES AND HARPS FROM ALL SCHOOLS AUDITION IN THE MORNING.  Students will NOT be allowed in the school until 8:00am.  If you arrive early, please wait in your car. 

8:15-9:00am:  Student registration for morning (AM) auditions.  
9:00am:  Morning registration closes 

9:00am-11:30am (approx.):  Morning (AM) Auditions (DO NOT LEAVE 

11:15am-12:00pm:  Student registration for afternoon (PM) auditions.  

12:00pm:  Afternoon registration closes 

12:00pm-3pm (approx.):  Afternoon (PM) auditions  (We may have to begin with remaining 


Students who miss their audition number WILL NOT be allowed to audition.  Students must bring their own rosin, extra strings, etc.  There will not be any vendors at the event, nor will Moody MS loan anything out.  Please contact me if you have any questions.

Audition Requirements

Violin, Viola, Cello, Bass Auditions 

Scales (20%)  All scales must be performed using separate quarter notes at a metronome marking equal to 120. All scales must be performed from memory.  You will be asked to play any two of these scales.  

Violin, Viola, Cello  (2-octave scales) 

C, G, D, A, F, Bb, Eb 


F and G (2-octave)

C, D, A, Bb, Eb (1-octave)

Prepared etude (60%)   #70-Allegro Spiritoso from Advanced Technique for Strings by Robert Gillespie. Students must follow all bowings, fingerings and positions as printed.    

Sight reading (20%) Each student will study an excerpt before being asked to play it. Students are not allowed to make any sounds while studying – no plucking or bowing.

NOTE TO VIOLINS: Your audition process involves you going into more than one room for each part of the audition. Please be sure to follow instructions of the student runners. 

To ensure the integrity of audition, the audition process is in the format of a “blind” audition. This means the judges cannot see your performance. They can only hear you. Students are not allowed to speak in the audition. If you have a question, you must ask the student runner (student helper). The runner will assist you by speaking with the judges on your behalf.

Students may be asked to start at ANY measure in the prepared audition piece.
